
Experienced Physics Software Engineer
The Engineer is responsible for reporting to the Lead Software Engineer/Technical Director, keeping them informed of technical progress as well as suggesting any improvements that will aid development.
A key aspect of this role is that the Engineer strives to improve their programming skill level and implement ways to push the features of the game under direction from their Lead Software Engineer.
The Engineer must also be able to work as part of a team and take advice from other Engineers who may have more experience in certain areas of programming, in relation to video game development.
The Engineer will work on implementing the physics support for all platforms (PS3/360/PC) in accordance with the Game Design specification. This will typically involve translation of the requirements into physics features that impact on aspects of game development and gameplay. The Engineer should be well versed being able to translate these requests into tangible actions and features to implement.
Primary duties for this Engineer will be the physics support for all platforms. This will require the Engineer to work closely with any and all members of the team ranging from those with highly detailed technical knowledge through to those that have little or no technical knowledge. The Engineer should be able to adapt their communication skills so they can engage with whomever they are dealing with in an appropriate manner. The Engineer will aim to work closely with all members of the Game Development Team to help to identify and implement a useful and worthwhile feature set.
Assisting the Lead Engineer in the induction of newly hired Engineers as required, providing them with a complete overview and hands-on familiarisation of the company programming procedures prior to being assigned to a working team.
Skills & Knowledge
•Must possess a high level of programming skills - this is a crucial requirement. The Engineer must have a strong background in programming, ideally relating to video game development.
•Very strong C++ with exposure to Design Patterns, STL and solid engineering techniques.
•Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
•Able to give and receive constructive feedback.
•Excellent organisational skills.
•Excellent troubleshooting abilities and/or the resourcefulness to obtain solutions.
•Willing to learn and be open to new ideas. The candidate must be adaptable and be able to pick up new skills quickly.
•Strong experience of physics for PS3 and Xbox360. Knowledge of physics for PC, Wii and other platforms is highly desirable. Of particular interest is commercial experience with Vehicle-based physics and physics simulations.
•At least one published title where the candidate has worked on physics.
•Video game experience – playing games as well as programming games.
•Relevant Computer Science, Maths or related Degree.
